New media or digital media such as VR/AR/XR, streaming entertainment, smartphone communication, and social media not only have created new lifestyles but also have brought about remarkable transformations in our bodily, cognitive, and emotional experiences. More importantly, they urge us to rethink what it means to be “human” in that, today, a prominent part of our thinking and feeling capabilities seems to be prompted—if not significantly operated—by digital media. This course will examine the abovementioned transformations as well as the social, cultural, and politico-economic impacts of new media. We will address these questions theoretically and also debate issues based on empirical research.

The course puts great emphasis on honing students’ critical thinking abilities, challenging them to reconsider what they may have taken for granted. A side goal of the course is for students to entertain the prospect of using the knowledge gained in this class in their future career development.

The course will proceed according to these thematic rubrics:

(I) New Ways of Thinking and Feeling: affective and multisensory experience, digitality or digital thinking, nonconscious cognition, cognitive assemblages and technical agency, dividuals (instead of individuals), embodied media, ambient media, etc.

(II) Societies of Control: social and political implications of surveillance and general application of digital technologies, possible violence of knowledge in big data

(III) New Media Art: the range of experience opened up by digital artworks

The course requirements are designed to help students to (A) learn classic theories and critical discourses on new media, (B) engage in debates on topical issues related to digital media, and (C) conceptualize and analyze questions posed by new media artists.

2) Preparation & class participation. Active participation in class discussion is essential. Prior preparation will earn you bonus points.
